Supermodels Who Aren’t Superthin

I have had this posts in drafts for a while because I was not sure how to write up about a picture article I found. But now I decided to just do what I can and encourage you to click the link to the actual page at glamour.com and check out the rest of the pictures.

This is from a picture slideshow with captions about each of the beautiful women in the photos. All about how plus size models are gorgeous and healthy.

My favorite picture is this one. The media seems to think only stick thin people can rock a bikini. Not so.

They also talk about previous eating disorders, getting their masters degree, and life of a model.
How do you feel about the media's portrayal of women's bodies? How much do you love these awesome plus size models?

Beat the Negative Self Talk

With the holiday season coming up and the eating habits we tend to pick up over the break, I thought I would post about body image. People have always told me that the media’s portrayal of women’s bodies is a very poor representation of what a healthy or normal body looks like. I never really believed them because I just thought that those pictures showed what skinny girls look like and it showed me I wasn’t skinny. Well then one day around the beginning of November, I stumbled upon this picture of Marilyn Monroe in a bathing suit. She was like THE sex symbol of her time and she was like a size 6 or something. She looks great and isn’t stick thin. That is when I realized that my body is beautiful just the way it is, and so is yours! I always thought this body image thing would have to be gradual, and for others it may be. But for me it was an abrupt thing. I'm totally ok with how I look and want to respect my body and keep it healthy so I can continue to live the life I love. So over the break when everyone starts talking about how fat they think they are or how they need to stop eating so much, just remember that confidence is the sexiest thing a woman can have and it just so happens that you are dead sexy already.

What do you do to make yourself feel sexy? Do you look at pictures of beautiful women at a healthy weight like me? Or maybe put on your favorite LBD and model it for the mirror?

Thanksgiving Eating-Its wonderful but can Lead to Unhappiness

I got home the other day and in the first three hours home, I had already eaten more then I probably did the whole week previous. I love the coming home and being able to enjoy my mother's cooking and baking along with all the goodies Thanksgiving brings. This brings me to talk about body image and people being worried about body size and gaining weight over the holidays. I would love for all people to realized that all different body types are beautiful. It is important to enjoy what you are supposed to be enjoying on thanksgiving: your family, friends, and what you are thankful for. Hopefully these tips can encourage that.

Move your body for at least 30 min each day. This can be a brisk walk, a jog on the treadmill, or dance around the house with your cousins.

Don't starve yourself waiting for dinner. This leads to over eating and eating way to fast. Snack here and there leading up to the big feast to prevent tummy aches and guilt.

Drink a big glass of water. This is my mother's remedy for almost everything. But it's probably because its a great idea. When you are bored hungry this week, before you eat a huge handful of chips and salsa, drink a big glass of water and wait a few minutes. Sometimes when we are dehydrated we will confuse the feeling with being hungry.

Don't talk to people about being unhappy with your body. This negative self talk won't help anyone and certainly won't help how you feel about yourself. If people bring up how fat they look or how much they hate how much they just ate, leave the conversation, change the topic, or flat out tell them that you don't want to have those kind of conversations. Keep things positive and focus on what is great about you!

There is an amazing blog that I found recently that is all about loving your body and fighting those media images of what we are "supposed to look like". Medicinal Marzipan has some great tips on how to stay healthy during the holidays and if you want to read more about this topic you should definitely check her out!

What's your favorite part of Thanksgiving? How do you stay positive during the bombardment of unattainable body images from the media?
